Ebook About
Seven key principles from Finland for building a culture of trust in schools around the world. In the spring of 2018, thousands of teachers across the United States—in states like Oklahoma, Kentucky, and Arizona—walked off their jobs while calling for higher wages and better working conditions. Ultimately, these American educators trumpeted a simple request: treat us like professionals. Teachers in many other countries feel the same way as their US counterparts. In Teachers We Trust presents a compelling vision, offering practical ideas for educators and school leaders wishing to develop teacher-powered education systems. It reveals why teachers in Finland hold high status, and shows what the country’s trust- based school system looks like in action.Pasi Sahlberg and Timothy D. Walker suggest seven key principles for building a culture of trust in schools, from offering clinical training for future teachers to encouraging student agency to fostering a collaborative professionalism among educators. In Teachers We Trust is essential reading for all teachers, administrators, and parents who entrust their children to American schools.

Book In Teachers We Trust: The Finnish Way to World-Class Schools Review :

Trust makes Finnish schools unique. After several books about the details of how school works in Finland, author Sahlberg (who now lives in Australia, which turns out to be helpful), takes a higher-level view. In essence, this book asks a very important question: "who should be trusted with the education of our children?"From my perspective, the only reasonable answer to that question is "the teachers." Sahlberg's guidance: when a society selects its teachers with great care and provides them with abundant support, school becomes a less complicated experience. The simplicity of this argument runs in parallel with trust in childhood. Apparently, in Finland, children are encouraged to play multiple times each day, regardless of weather conditions. School days are shorter. Homework assignments are reasonable. Students are not required to endure endless standardized testing or undesirable curriculum. Instead, they are trusted to become fully educated by teachers, school, and society as a network of trusted collaborations. The twin ideas of trust and collaboration present children, teenagers, parents, and an entire nation reliably high-level output, and a viable future. As I travel the world, visiting with teachers and interviewing students, I see only glimpses of what could and should be. In some ways, this visit to Finland reads like fantasy. I wish it could become reality for the U.S., the U.K., and so many other places. I'm certain that a billion children and teenagers feel the same way. And a whole lot of teachers, too. And, it's a good read. A collaboration between Pasi Sahlberg, author of FINNISH LESSONS, and Timothy D. Walker, author of TEACH LIKE FINLAND. They work well together, and I look forward to more joint efforts in the future.(Authors: thanks for writing a very good book.)
This book outlines many things we Americans could do to improve our education system. I’ve several quotes I’ll be sharing with my elected officials.
